Jesse Long to Speak at Spring Conference

SBI is excited to announce that Jesse Long will be our speaker for this year’s Spring Conference. Dr. Long serves as a dean of Lubbock Christian University and is also a Professor of Old Testament and Archaeology there. We’ve been given permission to copy the following biographical information from LCU’s website: “Jesse C. Long, Jr., is Dean of the Alfred and Patricia Smith College of Biblical Studies of Old Testament at Lubbock Christian University. He holds degrees from David Lipscomb University (B.A.), Alabama Christian School of Religion (M.A.), Georgia State University (M.Ed.), and Drew University (M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D.). Jesse enjoys teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in Old Testament and biblical archaeology at LCU and in area churches. His research interests are in Hebrew narrative and archaeology. Jesse authored the College Press NIV Commentary on 1 and 2 Kings.”

SBI President Ron Guzmán says he has counted Dr. Long as a teacher and friend for many years now. He playfully refers to Dr. Long as the “Indiana Jones of the Churches of Christ!” Dr. Long was the co-director of the Khirbet Iskander dig site in Jordan for many years. With co-director Suzanne Richard, he has published and spoken about many of their findings. Recently, he has also contributed to The Transforming Word: One-Volume Commentary on the Bible. His contribution is a chapter titled “The Archaeology of Israel.”

Brother Guzmán adds, “What many people don’t know is that Dr. Long (and wife JoAnn) have been hosting a trip to Israel for over two decades now. Every spring they take a group to ‘The Land of the Holy One’ for about ten days.” Brother Guzmán was privileged to go on one of those trips a few years ago. He says the experience was life-changing. “What a privilege to walk where the Lord walked and see some of what the Lord saw! Jesse and JoAnn were great hosts and really deepened this ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience.” SBI is excited to have Brother Long come and make three presentations to us for our Spring Conference. The dates are May 3-4, a Friday night through Saturday afternoon. The conference is free. DVDs are available for free if you can’t make it.
